THE SPA ITSELF

CONSTRUCTION QUALITY

Look for top quality materials and workmanship; these will ensure your spa costs less over the long run and brings you superior satisfaction.

  • Shell: Look for a spa shell made of high-impact thermo plastic or ABS-backed acrylic to minimize the possibility of delamination, cracking and blistering. ABS-type thermo (polymer) plastic is used in high-stress items like football helmets and stadium seats. Is the spa shell structurally sound enough not to need additional framing to prevent structural damage?
  • Skirt: Is it UV-stabilized, low maintenance? Check the skirting's warranty. Is it aesthetically pleasing, or does it look like vinyl siding?
  • In general: Are there nails or staples showing, do the parts fit seamlessly together? Is the bottom sealed to keep out moisture and insects? What kind of base is needed on which to place the spa? Can the spa be shimmed?

FILTRATION SYSTEM

  • Make sure the spa has continuous balanced filtration 24 hours a day. Does all water pass through the filters when the jets are running and you need clean water the most?
  • Is the filtration system easy to use, or do you have to program a cleaning (i.e. filter) cycle?
  • Filters should be top-loading and easy to get to.
  • Is there a device to direct body oils and debris from the water surface to the filter(s) rather than let them accumulate on the side of the spa?
  • Hint: Is the water in the spas in the showroom crystal-clear? If not, maybe the filter system of this brand of spa is not up to snuff.

PUMP SYSTEM

  • Is there a dual pump system (a small circulation pump in addition to a larger pump that runs the jets), or a single two-speed pump? A separate circulation pump increases energy efficiency (thus saving money) and runs quietly.
  • Higher pump horsepower does not necessarily mean better therapy, but it certainly does mean higher energy costs to operate.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

  • The main factors in energy use are:
    • Type and amount of insulation.
    • The insulating properties and design of the spa cover, including a proper heat seal (gasket).
    • Having a designated circulation pump vs. a larger two-speed pump that uses the lower speed for water circulation.
  • Is the spa totally insulated rather than "fully foamed"? Is it filled with closed-cell insulation like the type used in commercial freezers?
  • A well-sealed cover should require a bit of a tug to open.
  • Is the dealer willing to give you a written guarantee on energy use? Less expensive spas may cost up to $50 a month to operate.
  • Ask what is the largest size spa model (in gallons) that will reasonably run on 110 volts, as an indicator of energy efficiency.
  • Has the spa's energy use been rated by an independent third-party?
  • Look for the Energy Smart™ spa label.

HEATER

The most vulnerable component of the spa.

  • Is the heater designed to avoid corrosion due to water chemistry imbalance? For maximum performance and durability look for titanium or high-grade stainless steel elements and heater housings.
  • Is the heater warranty invalidated by improper water maintenance?
  • Is the heating and filtration system fully automatic, or do you have to program them?

NOISE

The best spas have no audible noise when the water is circulating, heating and filtering. Always ask for a demo of the heating and filtration cycles.

EASE OF OPERATION

Ask about spa operation.

  • Are the controls user-friendly, easy to operate and adjust?
  • Does it have to be programmed for the filter cycle to come on or the heat to come up when you want to use it?
  • What happens if the power goes off - do you have to reprogram it, or does it re-set itself?
  • Distinguish between the valuable features you need and the bells and whistles that may cost more to maintain.

JETS

  • Can jet pressure be individually adjusted?
  • Can the jets for an individual seating area be completely turned off for quiet soaking while the others remain on?
  • Is there a variety of jets that will target major muscle groups?
  • Is there a timer you can easily set to run your jets for a limited time?
  • How loud are the jets and pump?

MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY

  • What does it cover? Heater, surface, skirt, tile?
  • Does the warranty provide full coverage for the entire warranty period, or is it pro-rated like tire warranties?
  • If the spa has to be returned to the manufacturer for repair, who pays for pick-up and shipping of the spa?
  • Does the warranty "travel" with you if you and your spa move?
  • Ask for a written copy of the complete warranty, and compare it with other brands. Beware of the dealer who is reluctant to provide this.
  • Look for limitations or exclusions, and compare various brands.
  • How long has the manufacturer been in business?

PLUMBING

  • Good news! There are no plumbing requirements for a portable spa. They are filled and emptied using a garden hose.
  • But do check whether the spa's drain is full-sized (~1.5") and in the bottom of the spa (easily and quickly emptying all dirty water) or on the side, requiring you to bail water out of the bottom.

SAFETY

  • Get a spa with a locking cover and locking control panel to keep children safe.
  • Look for separate circuit breakers rather than just a one-breaker disconnect.
  • Choose a surface that is non-slip even when wet.
